Nye

Nye County is the largest county by area in the state, and the third largest county in the contiguous United States. Located in the south-central portion of the state, with an estimated present population of 46,256, consisting of approximately 19,040 households. With the state’s 14th lowest Annual Median Household Income (AMHI) at $39,420 per household, in 2017 the county ranked 7th in total population among Nevada’s seventeen counties. While it has no incorporated cities, Tonopah, the county seat, is a Census Designated Place (CDP) and is located in the west-central part of the county.

Tonopah is located approximately 160 miles northwest of Pahrump. Due to the distance from Pahrump, and the market difference of the northern area of the county, we have established two market areas: South Nye County (the Pahrump area) and Northern Nye County (the Tonopah and Northern Nye County area in general). The Beatty area (southeast portion of the county) is included in the remaining area of Nye County. Pahrump, where about 86% of the county’s population resides, is considered a bedroom community of Las Vegas, Nevada.

While most of Nevada’s landmass us under control of the BLM and Forest Service, the Nevada Test Site and proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository combine to bring the total lands under management of the Federal government to 92% of the land mass in the county. At the time this information was collected, 84.6% of the county’s population was employed in the Private Sector, and the remaining 15.4% in Government related jobs.
